Regals Ready to Tee-Off on 2019

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The Cal Lutheran women's golf team finished fourth in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) in back-to-back years and is looking to improve in 2019.

The Regals are coming off their first All-SCIAC First Team honoree last year and are eager to add another name to that list.

"In the whole recruiting process, it is important to do your research, not just in high school golf, but also summer golf," said head golf coach Jeff Lindgren. "We are trying to find the best skilled players, but also kids that fit what we are looking for, in being a good student-athlete. Our team fits that mold perfectly."

The Regals have two seniors that are back for their senior season. Lauren Fesler and Ally Gaskill are the co-captains and are ready to lead Cal Lutheran in 2019. In 2018, Gaskill was named Second Team All-SCIAC for the second year in a row. Fesler earned the Women's Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar award.

"We have a good balance of returning players and new players," said Lindgren. "We will be led by a few seniors and then a few juniors. They know how we do things and how we practice. They are a determined and focused group. I am super proud of their efforts to keep pushing forward."

The junior class is made up of Chloe Barnes, Erica Mitchell, Hannah Pasco and transfer Brooke Logsdon. All four look for extended roles this year. Barnes was named a SCIAC Athlete of the Week as a freshman, Mitchell placed second in a tournament last year and Pasco tied for eight in another. Logsdon was a team captain at Moorpark College for the past two years.

Looking to step up in their second year with the Regals are Bryttney Avella and Erica Cornelius

"We look like we can be better than last year, and that's the name of the game," said Lindgren. It is all about bringing back, everyone that is coming back, better than they were last year. If everyone is a little bit better, then we are going to be better as a team. They did work hard over the summer, and we had a good fall, so I think that motivates us to have a competitive spring.

The freshman looking for some playing time are Kate Caviezel, Grace Cornejo, Bailey Runchey and Kaitlin Sasamori.

"We always set goals, individually and as a team," said Lindgren. "We are a good enough team, that if we all put it together, we can compete for a SCIAC Championship. The team reached a top-25 ranking in the fall so we know we can compete with the best teams out there.

"We are getting ready for the first tournament. The girls are getting excited to get out there and see what they can do. We are ready for the test."

The Regals start the spring season in February. Cal Lutheran opens the season at the Point Loma Invitational on Feb. 4, in San Diego, Calif., at Rancho Bernardo Country Club.
