Kingsmen Rally Past Comets

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The No. 2 California Lutheran baseball team rallied from a two-run deficit for a victory, with a 7-5 thriller over No. 22 University of Texas-Dallas at Kino Memorial Stadium on Friday afternoon.

After trailing 5-3 going into the seventh inning, the Violet and Gold scored four runs in the bottom half and were able to take the lead for the first time in the game.

In the bottom of the seventh with one out, Chris Spohr singled up the middle. Trevor Egan doubled to right field, advancing Spohr to third. Tanner Wright, then tripled down the right field line, allowing Egan and Spohr to come home and score.

Up next was Alec Iniguez, who singled to left field allowing Wright to score. Then Weston Clark singled to left field which was followed by a double down the left field line by Ryne Yamashiro, bringing Iniguez home. The Kingsmen held the two-run lead the rest of the game.

Nate Wehner started on the mound and earned his first win of the season, after tossing 5.2 innings while allowing three earned runs and striking out three. Justin Fong pitched 1.1 innings of relief while Christian Slattery pitched the final two innings and struck out one, earning him his second save of the year.

Yamashiro led the Kingsmen with four hits, one double and one RBI, with a slugging percentage of 1.250. Wright was instrumental as well with two RBIs and one run, while Clark led the team with two runs.

Cal Lutheran (3-1) continues the season with Concordia (Texas) tomorrow, Feb. 10, at 1 p.m. PST in Tucson, Arizona.
