CLAREMONT, Calif. - The final Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) series of the spring sent the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) No. 16 Cal Lutheran baseball team to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps where the Stags stunned the Kingsmen with a 5-4 walk-off victory to make the final day of the regular season more interesting.
Although the opportunity to clinch at least a share of the SCIAC title in 2017 slipped away today, CLU still has a chance to claim its fifth straight conference championship tomorrow.
Today, CMS scored first with a run in the bottom of the first, but CLU earned the advantage in the top of the third. Max Weinstein launched a two-run homerun that scored Trey Saito after the senior led off with a single and stole second before Sinjin Todd was hit by a pitch and Gabe Gunter lifted a sacrifice fly to score Todd for the final run of the inning. The lead was short lived as the Stags knotted things up at 3-3 after the bottom half.
CLU regained its lead with a Saito RBI single that scored Brad Fullerton in the sixth to push the score to 4-3. Again, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps equalized with an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh and with one down in the final frame, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps put the game in the books with a run on a pair of hits.
Overall, CMS outhit CLU 13-9 as Gunter, Saito and Weinstein finished with two hits apiece and the four runs came from as many different players.
Nate Wehner worked 6.0 innings, allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out two before Troy Frazier took over in the seventh. He lasted one inning, striking out one, but allowing one run on two hits. Miguel Salud (3-2) took the ball for the final 1.1 innings and was tagged with the loss.
Cal Lutheran (26-10, 16-6 SCIAC) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (15-19, 9-12) continue the series tomorrow at Ullman Stadium where 10 Kingsmen seniors will be honored prior to first pitch, which is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on George "Sparky" Anderson Field.
