REDLANDS, Calif. — Four Regals scored in double Figures, but it wasn't enough as Cal Lutheran women's basketball fell to Redlands 80-73 on Saturday night.
With the loss, the Regals dropped to 3-4 in conference play and 9-5 overall.
Sara Mills led the way with 15 points, followed by Aliya DiMuro and Janna Holley with 13 points each and Karina McMillan with 10. Mills had a team-high six rebounds and four assists and McMillan had three steals.
The game had 12 ties and nine lead changes. Both teams shot in the 40's for field goal percentage and 30's from three-point range. The difference in the game came at the free throw line. Redlands was 31-36 at the line while Cal Lutheran was 8-16.
At the beginning, the Regals and Bulldogs kept matching each other in points and the score was tied 11-11. Redlands found their rhythm first though as the Bulldogs began to pull away with the lead at 20-15. The Regals stayed close as the first quarter finished 22-18.
Both teams came into the second quarter ready for a fight. The Bulldogs tried to increase their lead, but the Regals stayed right on their heels at 24-20. Cal Lutheran kept fighting and eventually tied the game at 34-34. The Regals turned things around in the second quarter and took a 39-36 lead at the half.
The Bulldogs returned with a vengeance as they quickly took the lead in the beginning of the third quarter, 41-39. The Bulldogs and Regals traded shots for the rest of the quarter and Cal Lutheran took a 59-58 lead after the third quarter.
Cal Lutheran came into the fourth quarter strong as the Regals increased their lead to 67-58. The Bulldogs refused to stay down as they began to make their own comeback. The Regals remained focused as they refused to let Redlands get to them, holding onto their 71-66 lead. The Bulldogs continued fighting and the score was tied 73-73 with three minutes left in the game. In the end, the Bulldogs had the answers and came from behind to take the win.
The Regals continue the season on the road. Cal Lutheran's next game is at Whittier on Wednesday, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m.
