THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran women's basketball had a strong start, but could not hang on and fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 68-59 on Wednesday night.
The Regals shot 33.8-percent from the field and just 23.8 from three-point range as they fell to 9-4 on the year and 3-3 in conference.
The game was close to even as Cal Lutheran dished out 17 assists to CMS' 13, while both teams turned the ball over 14 times each. The main difference was points in the paint as the Athenas had 32 to the Regals' 20.
Janna Holley had a team high 14 points, Sara Mills and Aliya DiMuro were next with 10 each and Karina McMillan and Alexa Greenwood had eight each. DiMuro and McMillan tied for the team lead in rebounds with eight, Holley dished out six assists and Holley and McMillan had two steals each.
CMS jumped out to a quick lead and was up 12-8 five minutes into the game. The Regals went on a 7-0 run to end the quarter and took momentum to the second. Holley made a three and two free throws and DiMuro added a layup. Cal Lutheran made it 12 points unanswered and took a 20-12 lead with 8:36 left in the half. Holley made a layup and converted on a three-point play and DiMuro also had a layup. The teams exchanged buckets the rest of the half and the Regals had a 38-32 advantage at the break.
The Athenas got the best of the Regals in the third quarter. CMS outscored Cal Lutheran 20-9 and took a 52-47 lead to the fourth. The Regals opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back three-pointers from Mills and Winton to take a lead. CMS fired back and went back up, 59-53, with 4:24 remaining. The Athenas continued to increase their lead and went up 62-53 with 3:18 left. The difference was too much to overcome as CMS picked up the win.
The Regals' next game is on the road. Cal Lutheran is at Redlands on Saturday at 5 p.m.
