Kingsmen Force Overtime, Steal Game from Westcliff

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran men's water polo went on a 9-1 run throughout part of the fourth quarter and into overtime as the Kingsmen made a comeback and then shut down the Westcliff Warriors 18-14 on Saturday afternoon.

Cal Lutheran improved to 9-12 overall and dropped their NAIA opponent to 16-14. The Kingsmen started slow, but turned it on to dominate in front of a full crowd on Homecoming. 

It was a defensive first half and started in the first quarter as the Kingsmen led 4-3 after one period of play. The defenses continued to dominate in the second quarter as Westcliff took lead at the half. The Warriors outscored the Kingsmen 3-1 in the second and had a 6-5 lead at the break. 

The third quarter saw more offense as Westcliff increased its lead. The Warriors outscored the Kingsmen 6-4 and took an 12-9 lead to the fourth.

Cal Lutheran came alive in the fourth quarter and overtime. The Kingsmen exploded with five goals in the fourth and held the Warriors to one, to force overtime. 

The Kingsmen came out with momentum in overtime and shutout the Warriors 4-0 in the first half of overtime. The Cal Lutheran defense did the rest, in the second half of overtime, and held on for a big win. 

Dillon Goldsmith led the way with five goals, Cormac Flanders was next with four and Taylor Garcia had three. Bo DuBois was in goal and had 13 saves. 

The Kingsmen continue the season with SCIAC play. Cal Lutheran host Chapman on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
