Clutch Plays Get Kingsmen Past Tigers, 67-60

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran men's basketball scored the final seven points and held off the Occidental Tigers 67-60 on Wednesday night.

With the scored tied at 60 with 1:51 to go, The Kingsmen took control and improved to 3-1 in conference and 6-6 overall. Brock Susko made a layup and then hit a three-pointer on back-to-back possessions to give Cal Lutheran a comfortable lead with 51 seconds.

The defense did the rest, as Susko and Desi Burrage both recorded a steal, and Cal Lutheran picked up another conference win.

Devon Lewis was 8-15 from the field and led his squad with 17 points. Tommy Griffitts added 14 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Susko had 13 points and added five rebounds, four steals and three assists. Lewis matched Susko with a team-high three assists.

The game saw seven tied and 13 lead changes. The Tigers shot better going 48-percent from three and 31.6 from the field while Cal Lutheran was 41.9 from the field and 26.1 from three.

The Kingsmen kept control of the ball and committed just 10 turnovers to the Tigers' 20. The Kingsmen also had 11 second chance points to the Tigers' two and 32 points in the paint compared to 26.

Cal Lutheran was tested by Occidental, but made the plays when they needed to the most. With Oxy up 55-51 with 5:09 left, the clutch plays kept the Kingsmen in the game. Susko made a layup to cut the lead to two. Jake Martin then hit a big, three-point shot and the Kingsmen had the lead. Stephen Davis then scored back-to-back buckets to keep Cal Lutheran in the lead. After the Tigers tied the game at 60, the Kingsmen took it from there.

The Kingsmen continue the season on Saturday. Cal Lutheran host Caltech at 7 p.m. in Gilbert Arena.
