Five Cal Lutheran Student-Athletes Tabbed SCIAC Athletes of the Week

ALISO VIEJO, Calif.– This afternoon the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) announced the Week 9 Athlete of the Week honorees and Cal Lutheran's Ben Brown (MWP), Maci Haddad (WVB), Jennifer Kent (WVB), Andre Rivas (MWP) and Brieyana Walton (WSD) were selected.

Brown earned the Men's Water Polo Offensive Athlete of the Week honors. The left attacker helped the Kingsmen to a 2-0 week. Cal Lutheran defeated La Verne, 13-11, and then Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 8-7. This is his first SCIAC AOW award. 

The freshman from Chula Vista, Calif., led CLU with a hat trick in each game. Against La Verne, he scored three goals on only five shots. He added two steals and one assist, drawn ejection and field block. Versus CMS, he scored three goals, dished out three assists, had five steals and two drawn ejections. With the 2-0 week, CLU is now tied in the No. 4 spot in the SCIAC standings.

Haddad was named the Volleyball Offensive Athlete of the Week. The middle blocker helped CLU go 2-0 on the week. Cal Lutheran defeated Chapman (3-2) and Pomona-Pitzer (3-0). This is her first SCIAC AOW award.

A freshman from Bakersfield, Calif., Haddad recorded a double-double in the match with Chapman. She tied her career-high with 10 blocks. She added 14 kills and four digs. On Senior Night against Pomona-Pitzer, she played in two sets and recorded 10 kills and two digs. She had an attack percentage of .500 on the week.

Kent, a setter from Thousand Oaks, Calif., earned Volleyball Specialist of the Week as the Regals swept the volleyball awards. She started just her second game of the year as Cal Lutheran took on Chapman. She dished out a career-high 55 assists and recorded a double-double with a career-high 19 digs.

The sophomore recorded two double-doubles on the week. In the second game against Pomona-Pitzer, Kent tallied 19 assists and 10 digs. This is her first SCIAC AOW award.

Rivas, a goalkeeper Escondido, Calif., earned the Men's Water Polo Defensive Athlete of the Week as the Kingsmen swept the water polo awards. This is the first AOW award. 

The sophomore was in goal for both games as he helped Cal Lutheran to the 2-0 week. Against La Verne, Rivas tallied 11 saves and chipped in with three steals and one assists. Versus CMS, he recorded nine saves and one steal.

Walton, a swimmer from Aurora, Colo., earned Swimmer of the Week. She helped pace the Regals at the Cal Lutheran Sprint Meet. She won one event and took second-place in another. She also competed in three relays events. This is her first SCIAC AOW award. 

The freshman won the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 32.88 seconds. Walton was then the runner-up in the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 1:05.56. She was also a member of three third-place relay teams. She was on the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:46.20), 400-yard medley relay (4:25.10) and 200-yard medley relay (2:01.65). 

The SCIAC Athlete of the Week series is released each Monday throughout the academic year.
