ALISO VIEJO, Calif.– This afternoon the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) announced the Week 8 Athlete of the Week honorees and Cal Lutheran's Gabby Flores (WSOC) and Steph Rolfson (WVB) were selected.
A sophomore from Santa Maria, Calif., Flores earned the Women's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week award. She helped the Regals go 1-0-1 on the week. Cal Lutheran defeated Pomona-Pitzer, 1-0, and tied with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 0-0.
The CLU goalkeeper, Flores, paced the Regals to a pair of SCIAC shutouts en route to earning her second weekly honor of the season. Flores turned aside 10 shots on target in the 0-0 double-overtime draw with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS), and added four more stops in a 1-0 win over Pomona-Pitzer. The win and draw lifted Cal Lutheran into second place in the conference standings. It was her eight shutout of the season, and sixth straight.
A senior from Valley Center, Calif., Rolfson was named the Volleyball Specialist of the Week. She led CLU to a 2-1 week. The Regals defeated Caltech, 3-1, Occidental 3-2, but fell to Whittier, 3-1.
Rolfson dished out 90 assists during the three-match span and finished the week averaging 6.92 assists per set. She also collected 33 total digs (2.54 per set) and posted a double-double in all three matches.
The SCIAC Athlete of the Week series is released each Monday throughout the academic year.
