SAN DIEGO — California Lutheran University men's basketball was on the court to compete with the University of San Diego, a Division I team, the second consecutive game with a D-I opponent, on Saturday night. The Toreros defeated the Kingsmen 84-55.

Cal Lutheran hung with San Diego and trailed by just nine points, 32-23, after the first half. The Toreros showed their D-I power in the second half, outscoring the Kingsmen 52-32.

It was the second straight games the Kingsmen played a Division I opponent. Cal Lutheran also played UC Santa Barbara last week. CLU gets back into their regular season and host Loras on Friday at 5 p.m.

San Diego shot 51.6-percent from the field while holding the Kingsmen to 34.4. The Toreros outrebounded Cal Lutheran 45 to 28. The Kingsmen did have better ball control and only committed 15 turnovers while the Toreros had 15.

The Kingsmen had two players in double-digits as Jacob Alonzo and Ryan Grande both had 10 points. Tommy Griffitts had eight points and six more Kingsmen scored.

Alonzo showed an all-around game as he tallied the team-high for rebounds, assists and steals. He recorded seven rebounds, eight assists and four steals versus the Division I foe.

The Kingsmen look to take the experience into Division III games as they welcome Loras on Friday.
