Kingsmen Cruise Past Beavers, Start Conference in Winning Fashion

PASADENA, Calif. — Tyler Sherard scored two goals, Igor Lumbrano and JP Melgoza both scored one, and Cal Lutheran men's soccer opened conference play in dominating fashion as the Kingsmen defeated Caltech 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Kingsmen improved to 2-1-2 during their five games away from home. The wait to watch them at home has been long enough as the Purple and Gold are home in William Rolland Stadium for their next contest.

Sherard scored the first goal of the game, his third of the year, in the 19th minute. Caltech answered back less than six minutes later and the game was tied.

The Cal Lutheran defense settled down after that, shutting out the Beavers, and the offense scored three unanswered goals.

Lumbrano and Melgoza both score their second goals of the year. Lumbrano scoffed in the 32nd minute and Cal Lutheran had a 2-1 lead at the half.

Melgoza notched his goal in the 53rd minute as the Kingsmen looked to put on the finishing touches. They did just that as Sherard scored the final goal in the 84th minute.

The Kingsmen defense allowed just four shots all game, with just one shot on goal. Goalkeeper Davis Sharts picked up the win with the stellar performance from the defense.

Cal Lutheran will try and carry that momentum into their next contest, their first at home this season. The Kingsmen host Whittier next Wednesday at 7 p.m.
