THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. Mason Johnson recorded his second double-double of the year with 25 points and 12 rebounds, Jacob Alonzo showed off his all-around game with 11 points, nine rebounds, six steals and five rebounds and California Lutheran University men's basketball beat the La Verne Leopards 88-76 on Wednesday night.

12 Kingsmen scored in the game and Tommy Griffitts made it three in double-digits with 11. Devon Lewis and Brock Susko both added eight and Desi Burrage and Brooks Mallory chipped in with six.

The Kingsmen improved to 4-3 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play and 11-4 overall. It was a tough night behind the arc as Cal Lutheran was 6-25 from three-point range. The Purple and Gold made up for it as they forced the Leopards into 19 turnovers, scoring 30 points in transition.

The bench also made its mark for Cal Lutheran. The Kingsmen scored 44 points, while holding the Leopards to just 23.

The game remained close early on as La Verne was up 12-10 with 13:33 left in the first half. La Verne had its biggest lead of the half, 19-14 with 9:17 left, as the Kingsmen looked to answer. Cal Lutheran did just that as the Purple and Gold went on a 17-4 run and took a 31-23 lead with 4:16 to play in the first. Five different Kingsmen scored during the run. The Leopards regained their composure and got back into the game as CLU led 38-35 at the half.

The teams exchanged buckets to start the half as Cal Lutheran held a slight lead at 46-41. Three straight buckets pushed the lead to 12 as Burrage hit a three and Griffitts and Johnson both added two-pointers.

La Verne would cut the lead to five twice over the next five minutes, but the Kingsmen never let them any closer. Cal Lutheran pushed its lead to the biggest of the game and were up 74-54 with 7:38 to play. The Purple and Gold coasted the rest of the way and won their second straight.

The Kingsmen look to make it three straight wins on Saturday as they host Whittier at 2 p.m.

Cal Lutheran will honor the 1961-62 at halftime. It is the 60th anniversary of the first men's basketball team.
