Regals Win Big on Senior Day; Lock Up No. 2 Spot in SCIAC

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — It was a successful Senior Day on Saturday as Cal Lutheran women's water polo celebrated Nicole GuerrieroAvery KarichBailey MeyerMardell RamirezNikki Roed and Megan Seeman and then defeated Chapman, 18-9. 

With the win, the Regals also locked up the No. 2 spot in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament and will host one of the two semifinal games. CLU is now 11-2 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play and 18-8 overall. 

The seniors saw a bulk of the minutes and played with one another for most of the game. Meyer was in the cage for the entire game and came up with 11 saves. Roed recorded a hat trick and stole the ball three times. 

Ramirez and Seeman both added a goal. Ramirez was all over the pool and dished out three assists and had three steals. Seeman tallied two drawn ejections and one assist. Guerriero tallied a drawn ejection and a field block while Karich had a field block of her own. 

Jessica Diaz was the high scorer on the day and put four goals in the back of the net. Victoria Rose Meek matched Roed with a hat trick and dished out two assists. The Regals converted on 6-of-10 power play opportunities and held Chapman to just 2-of-7. 

The Regals scored two goals in the first two minutes to start the game off hot, but Chapman scored four of the next five points and took a 4-3 lead. CLU answered with three goals in the last two minutes and had a 6-4 lead after one quarter.

In the second, the Regals' defense stepped up and the offense kept putting up points. Cal Lutheran outscored Chapman 4-1 and took a 10-5 lead at the break. CLU kept widening the distance in the third and fourth quarters, outscoring CU 4-2 in each quarter. The seniors went out with a bang as the Regals took down the Panthers 18-9.

The Regals have one more regular season game before they start postseason play. Cal Lutheran welcomes La Verne to the Samuelson Aquatics Center on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
