PORTLAND, Ore. – California Lutheran University women's tennis competed in a doubleheader on Monday as the Regals swept Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound 9-0.
The Purple and Gold got their first sweep of the year, never going up more than two sets in any match against the Lutes of Pacific Lutheran.
The Regals were off to a hot start in doubles. Carmen Bufkin and Brennan Foreman swept their competition at the No. 1 8-0, Carolina Groff Hinojosa and Sylvie Van Cott won at the No. 2 8-1 and Joslin Seaberg and Luisa Garcia recorded an 8-0 sweep at the No. 3.
Cal Lutheran picked up in singles right where they left off in doubles. Foreman won 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1, Garcia claimed the No. 2 6-0, 6-1, Groff Hinojosa won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 3, Lauren Sebastian was victorious 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 4, Gerda Jucys won 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 5 and Seaberg won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 6.
Cal Lutheran added its second sweep of the day and year after defeating Puget Sound in their second match of the day.
Bufkin and Foreman won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles, Groff Hinojosa and Van Cott claimed No. 2 doubles 8-2 and Seaberg and Garcia won No. 3 8-3.
The Regals went undefeated in every match of the day as Bufkin won No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-1, Foreman took No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-3, Garcia claimed No. 3 6-0, 6-2, Groff Hinojosa took No. 4 6-2, 6-1, Sebastian was tested at the No. 5 spot and won 2-6, 6-1, 10-4 and Seaberg took the No. 6 spot 6-2, 6-0.
Regal tennis wrapped up their Pacific Northwest trip with a 3-1 record.
The highlight of the second match came from Sebastian as she pulled out the closest match of the day winning 10–4 in the super tiebreaker to decide the match. She came back after losing the first set before riding the momentum of a second-set win into the third set super tiebreaker.
When asked how it felt to pull out such a close match, Sebastian said, "It felt powerful and humbling at the same time."
The Regals fly back tonight and return to action Wednesday, March 2, against William Jessup at home at 3 p.m.
