Kingsmen Knocked Off by Stags in SCIAC Opener

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The California Lutheran University men's soccer team suffered two early goals in the first half, and were unable to recover in their 2-0 defeat to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Wednesday night at William Rolland Stadium.

The Kingsmen outshot the Stags 14-8 while also dominating the corners category, winning seven corners in the match compared to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' two.

Play was extremely even in the opening minutes, both teams trading goal-scoring opportunities but unable to capitalize.

The visitors were first to get on the board when Nate Huntington managed to be the first player to a loose ball in the box. The Stags' attacker took his chance with confidence, blasting his shot just inside the left post to give his team a 1-0 lead.

The Stags quickly doubled their advantage when William Birchard delivered his free kick into a dangerous area. Once again pouncing on a ricochet in the box were the visitors, as this time it was Adam Singer poking the ball into the back of the net to make the score 2-0.

The turning point in the match came shortly after the second goal when a CMS player was shown a red card for violent conduct, reducing the side to 10 men. The game would intensify as four yellow cards would be shown before the end of the half. Despite the aggressive play and the uneven sides, the score would remain 2-0 at the end of the first 45 minutes.

Cal Lutheran was much more lively in the second half, creating many more scoring opportunities. The Kingsmen outshot the Stags 5-1 in the second half but could not find the goals they needed.

Matt Myers had the best attempt on goal in the 85thminute when his left-footed shot was driven hard and low at the CMS goalkeeper, but the man between the posts was equal to the effort.

Tallying shots on goal for CLU were Igor Lumbrano (2), Aaron Winsick, Daniel Pacheco, Chris Pelaez and Myers (2).

Cal Lutheran will continue conference play when they travel to Pasadena, Calif. to take on Caltech Sept. 21 at 11 a.m.
