No. 1 Women’s Water Polo Take Down No. 3 Redlands; Clinch Top Seed in the SCIAC Tournament

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The No. 1 Cal Lutheran women's water polo team held an opponent under 10 points for the fourth time this year as the Regals defeated Redlands 14-6 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Regals improved to 5-0 on the season, after taking down Redlands for the second time this year. With the win, the Regals clinched the top spot in the SCIAC Tournament and will host a semifinals game on Saturday at 11 a.m.

The offense and defense were clicking as the Regals rolled past the Bulldogs. Izzy De Souza was in the cage and got the win as she made 10 saves and added three assists.

On the other end, eight different Regals scored in the win. Jessica Diaz recorded the most and put up a hat trick. Kaitlin Gardhouse, Elyse Koe, Lexi Rond and Bethany Metcalfe all added two. 

Koe helped move the ball around and led the team with four assists. The Regals took advantage of their powerplay opportunities and converted on 6-of-9. Rond drew four exclusions and Koe added three more.

The defense clamped down and held the Bulldogs to just six points. Koe made two steals and Metcalfe tallied two more. CLU was up 4-2 after one quarter and the Regals picked it up and did not allow any goals in the second. The Purple and Gold scored three times during the stretch and lead 7-2 at the half. 

Redlands got back in the game outscoring CLU 3-1 in the third and cut the lead to 8-5. The Regals answered with six goals in the fourth quarter and won the game 14-6.

Cal Lutheran looks forward to the SCIAC Postseason Tournament and host a semifinals games on Saturday at 11 a.m.
