Down 2-0, Regals Volleyball Storm Back to Shock Sagehens

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. . Pandemonium in Gilbert Arena! It was a beautiful game as Cal Lutheran women's volleyball was down 2-0, only to storm back with a reverse sweep, and shocked the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens 3-2 on Friday night.

Cal Lutheran beat Pomona-Pitzer for the second time this season. Scores of the match were 24-26, 21-25, 25-20, 25-18, and 15-12. The Regals improved to an overall record of 13-8 and are 10-2 in conference.

Interview with Kira Mortensen and Maci Haddad

Cal Lutheran ended Pomona-Pitzer's four-match win streak, which had consisted of all sweeps. The Sagehens looked to continue their run of sweeps against the Regals, but the Regals had other plans, dropping them to 14-7 overall and 9-4 in SCIAC.

Maci Haddad and Sophia Muller dominated offensively, with 17 and 15 kills, respectively. Haddad recorded a hitting percentage of .400 and added eight block assists. Muller was one block shy of a triple-double adding nine block assists and 12 digs.

Kennedy Crane was next with seven kills, Kira Mortensen had six and Miranda Chan added five. Tess Holbert and Jalyn Chun both recorded a double-double. Holbert had 23 assists and 13 digs while Chun had 21 and 10.

Julia Trento led the defense and battled the Sagehens' offense, tallying 23 digs. She also led the team in service aces with three.

After going down 2-0, the Regals fired back. With the third set tied 8-8, Cal Lutheran went on a 13-3 run and broke through to win their first set. Down 10-7 in the fourth, Cal Lutheran kept coming. Another 13-3 run had the Regals up 20-13 as they forced a fifth set.

With the final set tied 8-8, the Regals made their final move. Cal Lutheran tallied five straight points and the energy in Gilbert Arena hit another level. The points came from everywhere as Muller recorded a kill, Haddad and Muller combined for a block, Haddad swatted down a kill and Holbert served an ace.

Cal Lutheran came all the way back, shocked the Sagehens, recorded the reverse sweep, and sent Gilbert Arena into a frenzy as Sadie Peete connected on her only kill of the match, for the win.

The Regals hit the road tomorrow and look to carry the momentum. Cal Lutheran is at Whittier and first serve is set for 4 p.m.
