Regals Rally Past Whitman in Four-Set Win, Fall to Babson in Five

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.  Cal Lutheran women's volleyball rallied past Whitman, winning their first game of the season 3-1, and went five sets with Babson, but fell 3-2 in the nightcap on Friday night.

The Regals started their season at the Pacific Coast Classic which was hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, La Verne and Pomona-Pitzer.

CLU 3, WC 1 – 16-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-15
Five Regals recorded six-plus kills as offense came from all over the court. Senior and All-American Maci Haddad led the way with 10 kills and had a .333 hitting percentage. Kira Mortensen had eight kills, hitting .412, and Sophia Miller matched her. Kennedy Crane was next with seven and Miranda Chan added six.

Tess Holbert was at the setter position and kept the offense moving. She recorded 32 assists and was all over the court with six digs, three blocks and two each of service aces and kills.

The defense was strong as Julia Trento led the way with 15 digs. Muller was next behind her with 10, Isabella Wade tallied eight and Crane added six. Haddad and Mortenson shut down the opposing offense with four blocks each at the net and Chan matched Holbert with three.

The second match of the day for the Regals went the distance. After going up two sets to none, this game it was the opponent that bounced back.

Holbert recorded the third double-double of her career with 35 assists and 13 digs. She was three kills shy of a triple-double. Trento kept the highlights coming and tallied a career-high 27 digs. 

Haddad led the squad with 13 kills while Crane was next with 10. Holbert had a career game and added a match-high five service aces. 

Defensively, five Regals recorded double-digit digs. Besides Trento and Holbert, Muller had 15 digs and Crane and Wade both added 10.

The Regals are back at it on Saturday for day two of the Pacific Coast Classic. They play New York U. at 9 a.m. and UC Santa Cruz at 1:30 p.m.
