Regals Open The '21 Season 1-1

Cal Lutheran Women's Volleyball opened the season by challenging the 11th ranked Pioneers of Transylvania University and University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh at the Pacific Coast Classic.

In a tight first set, the Regals held a 19-18 lead before Transylvania reeled off five straight points to take control of the set. A Transylvania hitting error gave Cal Lutheran a window, but a kill from the other side finished the set 25-22.

Set two saw the Pioneers jump out to an early 6-0 lead, but the Regals were able to answer with an eight point run of their own. Transylvania pushed their advantage to 24-14 and looked to end the set. The Regals fought back from the brink with seven straight points, but the deficit proved too much to overcome.

The Pioneers raced out to another significant lead in the third set, grabbing a 7-2 advantage. The Regals showed their resilience, carving away at a 12-6 Transylvania lead to tie up the third set at 12-all. The third set was a see-saw affair with Cal Lutheran achieving a 22-21 advantage. The Regals forced another tie at 23-23 after a Pioneer service error, but were unable to hold off the final two points, Transylvania took the set 25-23 and the match 3-0.

The Regals were led by Senior Maci Haddad with 12 kills and 1.5 blocks. The match also saw a team effort in the back row with Julia Trento, Morgan Given, Sadie Peete, and Kennedy Crane all reaching double digits digs.

Match two saw Cal Lutheran take on Wisconsin-Oshkosh in a five set thriller.

In set one, the Regals held a set high five point lead that the Titans were able to chip away at before finishing strong for a 25-22 win.

A 4-0 start to set two behind Kennedy Crane's serve led into a back and forth battle. A Christina Williams kill gave the Regals an important 23-20 lead. The set ended on a Titan service error tying the match one set to one.

The third set saw UW-Oshkosh hold a comfortable lead throughout as they took the set 25-16.

In a reversal of fortunes from set three, Cal Lutheran controlled set four and cruised to a 25-20 victory.

The deciding fifth set stayed close until double digits with a 10-10 tie. From there the Regals established that this would be their match taking five of the last six points to win the set 15-11 and the match 3 sets to 2.

The Regals' Maci Haddad led all players with 15 kills. Julia Trento had a team-best 22 digs for California Lutheran University, which received 22 and 18 assists, respectively, from Jenna Jones and Tess Holbert.
