Five Regals Set Top-10 Marks, Opara Wins Three Events at SCIAC Multi-Dual #2

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Sarah Bjornson, Jolie Caya, McKenzie Gerken, Zaria Opara and Veronica Redpath each recorded an all-time top-10 program mark as California Lutheran University women's track & field competed at the SCIAC Multi-Dual #2. 

The Regals won five events as they took on Chapman, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and La Verne in the second of three SCIAC competitions leading up to the championships. Opara won three events while Caya and Lexi Cox each won one. 
 
Cal Lutheran went 2-1 on the day. The Regals defeated La Verne 128-25 and Chapman 91-66, and were just behind CMS 89-73. 

Redpath recorded the third-fastest time in program history for the 3,000-meter steeplechase as she recorded a time of 11 minutes and 49.71 seconds. 

Caya and Opara had the fifth-best mark on the top-10 list in the 100 hurdles and discus, respectively. Opara won the discus, with the fifth-best top-10 mark, with 40.62m. Caya was the runner-up in the 100 hurdles as she cruised to a fifth-best mark with 15.37 seconds. 

Bjornson tied for the ninth-best mark in pole vault and Gerken had the 10th-longest in the discus. Bjornson tied for third at the meet as she cleared 2.90 meters while Gerken was the runner-up with 36.94 meters.

Opara led the way for the Regals with three wins. Opara won the discus, the shot put with 11.00 meters and the hammer with 44.68 meters. Caya took first in the long jump with 4.92 meters and Cox won the triple jump with 10.32 meters. 

The Purple and Gold were runner-up two more times as Jasmyne Santamaria Holliday recorded 13.00 seconds in the 100-meter dash and Jasmine Rico tallied 4.87 meters in the long jump. 

Bjornson and Fatima Cervantes each turned in another bronze finish for the Regals. Bjornson was third in the high jump with 1.50 meters and Cervantes had 9.30 meters for third in the triple jump.  

Hannah Sewall and Holliday just missed a podium spot as the duo finished fourth. Sewall was fourth in the 400 hurdles with 1:10.60 and Holliday was fourth in the 200-meter dash with 27.04. 

More top marks for the Regals was Samira Negrete as she placed fifth in the 1,500-meter run (5:02.65) and 800-meter run (2:23.20). Redpath was seventh in the 5,000-meter run with 19:47.69 and Cassidy Fukuda was ninth in the 400-meter dash with 1:05.63. 

Cal Lutheran continues the season next weekend and are at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Saturday. The meet starts at 9 a.m.
