RICHARDSON, Texas – Gerda Jucys got the clinch at the No. 4 spot as Cal Lutheran women's tennis took down No. 28 Texas-Dallas 5-4 on Monday afternoon.
The Regals went undefeated on their Texas trip, 3-0, and improved to 6-1 on the season. They are off to their best start since 2018-19 when they opened the year 10-1.
The Regals won two of the three doubles matches and took an early lead against the Comets. Luisa Garcia and Lauren Sebastian won the No. 2 doubles spot 8-5 and Jucys and Henna Levanen took the No. 3 spot 8-7 (7-1). Reya Maestas and Carmen Bufkin fell 8-4 at the No. 1.
Texas-Dallas quickly tied the match and then took the lead. Maestas fell 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 3 and Levanen was defeated 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5. The comets increased their lead to 4-2 as Garcia fell 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 2.
Cal Lutheran fired back and won the next three matches and took the dual. Bufkin won 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 1 and Kayla Kling was victorious 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 6.
It all came down to Jucys at the No. 4 spot. After falling behind 6-3 in the first set, Jucys prevailed, winning the next two sets with scores of 6-4 and 6-2.
The Regals return to California for their next matchup, but stay on the road. Cal Lutheran is at Redlands on Friday at 3 p.m.
