SARATOGA, Calif. – Brennan Foreman won Flight D, Sylvie Van Cott was the runner-up in Flight C, Carolina Groff Hinojosa claimed third-place in Flight E and Joslin Seaberg won all three of her matches in the round robin Flight G to highlight California Lutheran University women's tennis in their final fall event, the Slug Invite.
The Regals took on five Division II teams, Fresno Pacific, Stanislaus, Dominican, Academy of Art and Holy Names, and also got a sneak peek at local Division III opponent, Cal Lutheran
It was a round robin and knockout tournament and was hosted by UC Santa Cruz at West Valley College.
Foreman won all three of her matches as she claimed the Flight D title. She won her quarterfinal match 6-2, 7-6(1), the semis 7-5, 6-1, and the championship 6-1, 6-4. She wrapped up a successful weekend as she led the Purple and Gold at the event.
Seaberg also went 3-0 over the weekend as she put on a show in Northern California. Seaberg competed in the round robin Flight G. She won her matches 6-0, 6-1, then 6-2, 6-3, and 6-3, 2-6 (10-4).
Van Cott started Flught C with a 6-1, 6-1, as she cruised into the semis. She was successful there, winning 6-3, 7-5, and advanced to the championship. She came up just short and was the runner-up with a score of 3-6, 0-6.
Groff Hinijosa took home third-place in Flight E. She started her tournament with a 6-4, 6-2, win, but fell in her next match 1-6, 2-6. She played in the third-place match and won 7-5, 3-6 (10-7) to end on a high note.
Carmen Bufkin and Luisa Garcia also competed for the Regals. Bufkin lost her opening match 6-3, 4-6 (7-10) in the East stage of Flight B, but advanced to the West final after her opponent was injured. She finished her tournament with a win, 7-5, 6-3, in the West bracket. Garcia lost her match in the East (1-6, 1-6) and the West (3-6, 3-6). She also finished with victory as she won her match in the South (3-6, 6-2 (10-6))
The Purple and Gold has two doubles teams compete. The duo of Garcia and Seaberg won both of their matches in Flight C, winning 8-4 and 8-3. In Flight B, Groff Hinijosa and Foreman opened with an 8-4 win. They fell in the semis (7-8(5)) and then in the third-place match (5-8).
The Regals ended their fall season with a positive side and look forward to their season in the spring.
