POMONA, Calif. – Sophia Gawrit won Flight C at the Division III West ITA Regional Championships that were held Friday through Sunday at Pomona-Pitzer.
Thirteen Regals competed in the individual competition while three doubles teams were also in action.
There was a winner's and then consolation bracket. If you won your first match, you kept going in the winner's bracket until you were knocked out. If you lost your first match, you went to the consolation bracket. Athletes would advance through that until they lost and were knocked out.
Gawrit got a bye in round of 32 and then won her round of 16 (6-0, 6-0). She advanced through quarter finals (7-5, 6-2) and won in the semis (7-6(6), 6-2) to reach the Flight C final.
Her teammate, Luisa Garcia, was on the other side of the bracket and met her in the final. Garcia advanced in the round of 32 with bye. She won in the round of 16 (6-0, 6-0) and won in the quarters (6-3, 6-4). She advanced to the finals after winning her semis match (7-5, 7-5).
Gawrit won the match between teammates with a score of 6-2, 6-3, and took the Flight C crown.
The doubles team of Carmen Bufkin and Sylvie Van Cott fell in their opening round match (3-8), but advanced all the way to the consolation finals. The duo came up just short, falling 1-8.
Brennan Foreman and Bufkin competed in Flight A. Foreman was eliminated in the consolation round of 16 qualifier and Bufkin fell in the consolation quarterfinals.
In Flight B, Heidi Levanen was eliminated in the consolation round of 16 qualifier, Jordan Buck lost in the consolation semifinal and Carolina Groff Hinojosa and Van Cott lost in the consolation semis.
The Regals did most of their damage in Flight C. Kayla Kling went on a run as she cruised through the round of 32 (6-1, 6-0), round of 16 (7-5, 5-7 (10-6) and the quarterfinals (6-0, 6-4). She came up just short of the finals, falling 6-7(2) 2-6 in the semis.
Gerda Jucys and Mina Ahmadi made it the quarterfinals fo Flight C. Jucys got a bye in the round of 32, won her round of 16 match (6-2, 6-4), but fell in the quarterfinals (1-6, 1-6). Ahmadi won her round of 32 (6-3, 6-4), the round of 16 (6-0, 6-0), but fell in the quarters (5-7, 2-6).
Rubina Copano, Lauren Sebastian, and Joslin Seaberg all moved through the Flight C winners bracket, but fell in the round of 16.
More women's doubles teams were Foreman and Groff falling in the winner's bracket round of 16. Levanen and Seaberg lost their opening round in the winner's bracket. The duo advanced all the way to the consolation quarterfinals, but fell 1-8.
It was a great showing for the Regals, which starts the team's season in the spring.
