Regals Third at SCIAC Championships, G. Cornejo Character Award Winner; Zook T-4th, Legacion T-10th

BEAUMONT, Calif. — California Lutheran University women's golf finished third as the Regals competed in the 2022 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships which were held Sunday through Tuesday at the Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon. 

Competing for the Regals was Ashley Zook as she tied for fourth, Jett Legacion tied for 10th, Claire Cornejo was 15th and Grace Cornejo and Tara Ng tied for 26th. The Regals tied for their best finish at the championships. They have now placed third, five times. G. Cornejo was named the Character Award winner.

The championships consists of three legs, with two rounds being played at SCIAC #1, two at SCIAC #2 and three rounds at the championships. The team title is determined from all seven rounds and individual awards were determined at just the championships. The women played the first round at "Champions Course" and the next two rounds at "Legends Course". The Par for the two courses was 72. 

The Regals shot 631 at SCIAC #1 and 651 at SCIAC #2. They carded a 322 in round one of the SCIAC Championships, improved with a 311 in round two and shot 319 in round three. The Purple and Gold finished at 88-over-par with 952 strokes. Overall, the Regals were third with 2,152 strokes.

Zook was fantastic during her first SCIAC Championships and was 11-over-par. She shot a 78 in the first round, fired a 1-under-par 71 in the second and then a 78 in the third. She totaled 227 strokes, tied for the second-most pars with 33 and added seven birdies. 

Legacion made it two Regals in the top-10 and was 19-over-par. She stayed consistent shooting a 77 in the first and a 79 in the second and third. She recorded 235 strokes with 29 pars and tied for a team-high seven birdies.

C. Cornejo had three Regals in the top-15 as she placed 15th at 25-over-par. She got better each day with an 83 in the first round, an 80 in the second and a 78 in the third. She totaled 241 strokes, 30 pars and added four birdies.  

G. Cornejo (89-81-84-254) and Ng (84-84-86-254) tied at 38-over-par. G. Cornejo had the fifth-most pars at the tournament with 30 and Ng had 21 pars and three birdies.

The Regals await a committee's decision at the selection show on May 2 for a chance at the 2022 NCAA Women's Golf Championship. The tournament is May 10-13 at Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas.
