REDLANDS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran Softball fell in both doubleheader game, the second one being a heartbreaker, on Saturday afternoon. Redlands won game one 10-1 in five innings and stole game two 5-4.
The Regals are playing two, three-game series, with Redlands and Chapman this season. The sweep from Redlands drops CLU to 1-5 on the year.
In the first game, Redlands defeated Cal Lutheran in five innings, for the second straight game.
The Regals did get on the board first, scoring in the top of the first. Madison Gunn and Ashley Membrere both walked to start the game. Emily Blank laid down a perfect sac bunt to advance the runners and the Regals were in business.
Ariana Mendoza did the damage as a sacrifice fly to right field scored Gunn. That was all Cal Lutheran could get across in the inning.
Meghan Henry got the start for the Purple and Gold, but got taken out after two innings. She allowed eight hits, eight runs (just three earned) and took her first loss of the season.
Redlands scored three runs in the first, five in the second and two in the third. CLU was shut down the rest of the way as the Bulldogs won 10-1 in five innings.
In game two, Redlands got on the board first and scored one run in the bottom of the first. CLU tied the game in the third as Mendoza tallied a RBI single.
The teams were quiet the next few innings, until the top of the sixth. With the bases loaded, Madison Gunn delivered a bases-clearing triple as the Regals jumped out to a 4-1 lead.
It did not last long as Redlands answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. The Bulldogs finished off the game in the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off, winning 5-4.
Taryn Faull pitched a complete game for the Regals. She went 6.1 innings and recorded four strikeouts. She allowed five runs, three were earned, on eight hits.
CLU has the next weekend off. The Regals are back in action on Friday, the 23, and host Chapman at 2 p.m.
