FRESNO, Calif.— Senior Victoria Rose Meek and junior Kemi Dijkstra both recorded a hat trick as Cal Lutheran women's water polo defeated Division II Fresno Pacific, 15-11, for its first win of 2020.
Six different Regals scored at least two goals as juniors Jessica Diaz and Elyse Koe and sophomores Kaitlin Gardhouse and Lexi Rond all got in on the fun.
The offense was flowing the entire game as the Regals tallied 10 assists. Gardhouse was the team leader with three as Diaz and Dijkstra added two each.
The Regals put themselves in good offensive situations and were 4-of-6 on powerplay opportunities. On the defensive end, they kept the Sunbirds at .500 as they were 5-of-10.
In the cage was Taryn Sato and she got her first win with the Purple and Gold as she tallied 10 saves. Helping with the defense was Dijkstra and Gardhouse with 2 steals.
The first quarter went back and forth with each team having the lead as the Sunbirds had a 4-3 advantage at the end of the first. The Regals responded in the second, outscoring FPU 6-2 and took a 9-6 lead at the half.
The Regals' momentum from the quarter continued throughout the rest of the game as CLU outscored the Sunbirds 4-3 in the third and both teams scored 2 in the fourth. Cal Lutheran finished the Fresno State Invite with a win, defeating Fresno Pacific 15-11.
The Regals continue the season at home with Long Island on Thursday at 6 p.m. Cal Lutheran then host their annual Tina Finali Memorial Tournament on Friday and Saturday at the Sameulson Aquatics Center.
