Diaz’ s Four-Goal Haul Leads Regals to 10-8 Victory Over La Verne

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran Regals waved goodbye to the regular season, Wednesday afternoon, with a 10-8 victory over the La Verne Leopards. Leading the charge, sophomore Jessica Diaz tabbed four goals while senior keeper Bailey Meyer collected 14 more saves to her record-breaking total.

Offensively, three of Diaz's four goals came in the back half the contest, while junior Victoria Rose Meek and senior Nikki Roed added two more scores apiece. Rounding out the crew, junior Christin Hirn found the back of the net in the first and freshman Susanna Zdolsek capped things off with a goal in the fourth.

Cal Lutheran got off to a quick start with a 3-0 lead heading into the final seconds of the first quarter behind goals from Roed, Hirn and Diaz. And though La Verne scored with 13 seconds remaining in the period, the momentum remained with the Regals.

The two teams maintained the two-goal deficit after the second quarter as well, largely in part to six saves by Meyer in the eight-minute span alone. She leaves the game with a career total of 890 saves, now just 3 saves away from tying the program record of 893 set by Gina Merry in 2016.

Up 4-2 entering the second half of the contest, the Regals blanked the Leopards with four goals, two from Diaz. However, La Verne's Guarina Garcia took things upon herself in the fourth, scoring five goals in the final quarter.

On the other hand, Cal Lutheran answered with goals by Diaz and Zdolsek push their lead back out 10-7. Combined with smart defense and ball possession, a final 5-meter shot by the Leopards did little in halting the Regals' final 10-8 victory.

The Regals close out the regular season with an overall record of 19-8 and 12-2 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. As the No. 2 seed, Cal Lutheran now awaits their matchup for the SCIAC Tournament semi-finals set for Friday, April 26, 2019.
