THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Goalkeeper Bailey Meyer slid into the school's top ten records for the second time in her career Saturday afternoon, but the defense wasn't enough as the Cal Lutheran Regals were edged 11-10 by the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas on senior day.
Meyer's eight saves racks up her season total to 284, breaking her own second place record for saves in a single season from 2017 of 281. She comes up just five short of the current first place holder, Gina Merry, who sits atop with 289 saves in 2015.
CMS took the early 2-0 lead on a goal by Jessica Gaffney two minutes into the game and subsequent five-meter penalty shot by Aracelia Aldrete a minute later. However, Kristi McGee quickly followed up with a hat trick in the first period for the Regals' first three goals of the game.
Megan Seeman, Nicole Roed and Nicole Guerriero got in on the action in the second for the Regals, scoring a goal apiece. Athenas' Roxy Kiessling responded though with a hat trick of her own in addition to Gaffney's second goal of the game to knot the game up 6-6 at the half.
The Athenas opened up scoring in the third with three consecutive goals, two from Kiessling and another from Christine Hu, but the Regals came back with two goals of their own from Avery Karich and McGee to cut the deficit back to one heading into the final period.
In an intense fourth, Kiessling once again came up big for the Athenas, pushing the lead back out to two with 5:42 left to play. Victoria Meek answered with a goal to bring in back within a one-goal game. But Kiessling managed her seventh goal of the day to push the lead back to two, and although Roed notched a goal with 29 seconds left to play, the Regals' comeback came up short.
Cal Lutheran's season is far from over, however, as the team heads into the SCIAC Postseason Tournament as the #2 seed. They will rematch against #4 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the semifinals on April 27th at 4 p.m. PST at home.
