THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The No. 2 California Lutheran women's water polo team got back into Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play and knocked off the La Verne Leopards 10-6 Tuesday afternoon at the Samuelson Aquatics Center.
The Regals snapped a five-game winning streak against the Leopards. CLU improved to 3-0 in SCIAC play and 10-4 overall. They are also on a three-game winning streak.
Christin Hirn led the Violet and Gold with three goals. Mardell Ramirez and Sam Wulfestieg were next with two apiece. Erin Cunefare, Nicole Guerriero and Megan Seeman each added one more. Victoria Rose Meek had three drawn exclusions and McGee had two.
The Regals were on point defensively. They only allowed one goal in each of the first, second and third quarters. Bailey Meyer was in front of the cage the whole game and made seven saves. Seven different Regals tallied a steal.
La Verne got on the board first as they scored a minute and a half into the game. It took a while for the Regals to get on the board, but Seeman tied it up with 2:56 left in the quarter. Cunefare added the next goal with 23 seconds left in the quarter.
CLU opened up the lead in the second quarter as they scored five goals. Wulfestieg scored both of hers while Hirn, Guerriero and Ramirez scored the others. The Regals had a 7-2 lead at the half.
The defense didn't let up in the third, as CLU only allowed one goal in the third. Hirn also scored for the Regals and the score was 8-3 after three. CLU used that lead and won the game 10-6.
The Regals were just shy of .500 for a shooting percentage as they took 21 shots and made 10 of them.
Cal Lutheran is back in action Thursday. The Regals travel to Chapman and take on the Panthers at 4 p.m.
