Regals Open SCIAC Play with Win

LOS ANGELES – It was a dominating day in the pool for the California Lutheran women's water team as eight different Regals scored in an 18-9 win against Occidental Wednesday afternoon in Taylor Pool.

The 18 goals are the most the Regals have scored so far this season. CLU improved to 5-2 and 1-0 in SCIAC play. The Tigers dropped to 0-4 and 0-2 in conference.

Kristi McGee led the Regals with five goals. This is the second game this year that she has scored five times. She didn't miss a shot as she had a 1.000% shooting percentage. She also tallied two assists.

Christin Hirn and Victoria Rose Meek both recorded a hat trick. Hirn had one assist and Meek added one assist and one steal. Meek led the team with three drawn ejections.

Bailey Meyer protected the cage and helped secure the win for the Regals. She played the first half and tallied seven saves and two assists. Gaby Renteria came in for the second half and recorded four assists and one assist.

Cal Lutheran got on the board right away as Meek scored 15 seconds into the game. After an offensive foul by Oxy, McGee scored to make it 2-0.

The Regals continued to put up the points. Mackenzie Thomas scored at the 4:47 mark as she received a great pass from McGee. Thirty seconds later, McGee tallied her second goal of the game. Erin Cunefare made it 5-0 as she scored with one minute left in the first quarter.

Meek started the scoring in the second quarter and the Violet and Gold had a 6-0 lead. Hirn scored one minute later and CLU was up 7-0 with 6:26 left in the half. Meek recorded a hat trick, just 15 minutes into the game, and the Regals were up 8-0. Oxy scored twice before Thomas answered with her second goal of the game. At the half, CLU was up 9-2.

McGee kept scoring as she scored the first goal of the second half. Avery Karich got on the board as she found the back of the net. McGee then added back-to-back goals and Cal Lutheran was up 13-5. Megan Seeman, Nicole Roed and Hirn each had a goal in the final two minutes to give the Regals a 16-7 lead at the end of the third.

In the fourth quarter, Cunefare pushed CLU's lead to 17-8. Hirn doubled up the Tigers with 48 seconds left in the game as she put CLU up 18-9.

Cal Lutheran continues the season on the road and travels to Bloomington, Ind., for a tournament. The Regals begin the tournament Saturday against Indiana at 12:00 p.m. PST and then take on Mercyhurst at 3:45.
