Women’s Tennis Falls to Chapman in Conference Opener

ORANGE, Calif. – It was a tough start to conference play for Cal Lutheran Women's Tennis as the Regals fell to Chapman 9-0 on Saturday afternoon. 

After a NCAA decision, the winner of CLU and CU in a best-of-five series will not get the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. The teams will need an automatic berth to the championship.

The match started with a doubles sweep by the Panthers. Carolina Groff Hinojosa and Brennan Foreman lost at the No. 1 (8-4), Heidi Levanen and Joslin Seaberg came up short at the No. 2 (8-5) and Jordan Buck and Sophia Gawrit were defeated at the No. 3 (8-3).

The Panthers carried that momentum to singles, as they snuck out singles win at the No. 3 and 4 spots. The Regals battled as Foreman fell 4-6, 6-0, 10-5 at the No. 2. And Groff Hinijosa lost 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 at the No. 3.

The four other singles matches were swept in straight sets. Henna Levanen lost at 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 1, Buck fell 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 4, Hei. Levanen was defeated 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 5 and Seaberg lost 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 6.

The Regals continue the season with a non-conference opponent. CLU will host Azusa Pacific on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
