SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Cal Lutheran opened their season with two convincing victories over Mills College and UC Santa Cruz to begin their season, Saturday afternoon at the Poulson Tennis Courts.

"This was an extremely tough day with both of our teams playing doubleheaders," said Head Coach Mike Gennette. "We had very long delays due to the weather. We faced a lot of tough obstacles including three injuries today. It's an opportunity learn and grow."

Match 1 – Mills College

The Regals dominated their first matchup with Mills College, winning 9-0 while only dropping two games.

Joslin Seaberg competed in the number-one spot for CLU and set the tone with a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

Cal Lutheran were flawless in the rest of the singles competition as each Regal picked up a double-bagel against their opponent. Heidi Levanen, Sophia Gawrit, Carolina Groff Hinojosa and Rubina Copano performed extremely well to win all five of the remaining matches in singles.

Moving to the doubles side, Lilijana Peters-Semak and Brennan Foreman won 8-0 to lead things off, earning another double-bagel.

The duo of Seaberg and Groff Hinojosa won 8-1 before Levanen and Gawrit cruised to yet another bagel, winning their match 8-0.

Match 2 – UC Santa Cruz

In the second contest, Cal Lutheran was once again proven to be the much better team. The Regals defeated the Banana Slugs 8-1 as they comfortably earned their second victory of the day.

Peters-Semak and Foreman combined for another doubles win, taking their match 5-2. JoAnn Taylor and Seaberg faced some stiff competition in their match, but came away with a 8-4 victory. In the final doubles tilt, Groff Hinojosa and Levanen won 8-2.

The success continued in singles as Peters-Semak took another match 7-6, 6-4 before Foreman went on to win a very tight match in three sets, outlasting her opponent 6-1, 1-6, 10-7.

Seaberg, Levanen and Gawrit all completed their undefeated days at the court with singles victory and the Regals would feel good about their performance in Santa Cruz, Calif.

Cal Lutheran looks forward to their home opener against George Fox (Ore.) on Feb. 14 at 10 a.m. at the Poulson Tennis Courts.
