OJAI, Calif. — The Cal Lutheran women's tennis team competed at the Ojai 118th Annual Tournament which was held Thurday through Sunday. The Ojai is played on over 100 courts at over 30 locations throughout western Ventura County.
The Regals had six competitors in the Division III Invitational Singles as Gianna Cupo, Christie Kurdys, Jade Moore, Nicole Neumann, Sarah Seeman and Annette Sousa represented the Violet and Gold.
Kurdys and Seeman both advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Kurdys defeated Amanda Rodriguez (Whittier) in the first round 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. She then defeated Savannah Hammick (UC Santa Cruz) in the round of 16 6-4, 6-1, but then lost Alisa Organovich (Chapman) in the quarterfinals 1-6, 1-6. Seeman won her round of 32 match against Catrina Kwong (George Fox) with a final score of 6-2, 6-1, and then defeated Lauren Sandifer (UC Santa Cruz) 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 16. Seeman then lost in the quarterfinals to Mary Cordone (Southwestern) 0-6, 1-6.
Cupo won her first round match before being defeated in the second. Cupo knocked off Isabelle Brown (UC Santa Cruz) 7-5, 6-4. She then came up short and lost Organovich 0-6, 4-6.
Neumann, Moore and Sousa all lost in the first round and played in the consolation bracket for the remainder of the tournament. Sousa got a bye in the next round, but Moore and Nuemann lost and their singles tournament was over. Sousa made a run in the quarterfinals and semifinals as she won 6-2 (ret. Inj.) and then 6-0, 2-6, 14-12, respectively. Her tournament ended in the consolation finals as she lost 1-6, 3-6.
In the Division III Invitational Doubles, there was only the winner's bracket. Cupo and Kurdys had a first-round bye, Neumann and Sousa won 4-6, 6-1, 12-10 and Moore and Seeman lost 1-6, 0-6.
Cupo and Kurdys were victorious in the quarterfinals as they won 6-3, 6-3. They then lost 6-4, 6-7 (9-11), 4-10 in the semifinals. Neumann and Sousa had their run come up short as they lost in the quarterfinals 3-6, 6-4, 9-11.
Cal Lutheran will now wait and see if any individuals get invited to the NCAA Division III Tournament. A NCAA committee selects the individuals and doubles teams.
