LA VERNE, Calif. – Looking to secure a spot in the playoffs, the Cal Lutheran Regals picked up another three points in a 2-0 victory over the La Verne Leopards. Freshman Danielle Vis and sophomore Alexandra Fagerberg each picked up their third goals of the season in the Saturday night matchup while the defense held the Leopards to just one shot on goal the entire night.

Vis led the offense three of the team's shots, all three on goal. More importantly, the freshman was able to put one between the posts in the 20th minute of play to put the Regals up 1-0. Junior Emily Williams began the play, servicing a weighted through ball to Vis who dribbled past the La Verne backline and sent one easily to the back of the net.

La Verne had no rebuttal for the Regals, though, and could not get past the defense the entire first half. The Leopards managed a total of just three shots in the 90-minute frame, the first coming by Amaris Sherlock in the 52nd minute who caught the Regals' keeper off her line, but sailed a shot high right of the goal.

Not long after, sophomore Sam Cornejo intercepted a pass in the midfield in the 60th minute before taking it up the middle herself for 20 yards and followed with a bullet toward the right post but curtailed a few inches too wide.

Moving into the final third of the game, Vis continued to increase the offensive pressure with back-to-back shots. The first came in the 75th on her own cross from the right side that was punched out by Leopard keeper Jasmine Valadez, but Vis was able to clean up the ball and narrowly got a shot off before Valadez leaped to smother ball just two feet into its flight path. The second came a minute and half later where Vis ran one-on-one with a defender up the right hash marks of Ortmayer Stadium and took a shot to the left post, but was right on line for the keeper.

The momentum was just what the Regals needed, however, as Cal Lutheran notched their second goal in the 78th minute. Vis again pushed the team up the field and crossed a ball from the right that rattled off the top cross bar but right to the feet of Fagerberg who swiftly poked the ball past the stunned keeper to send the team home with the 2-0 victory.

The win moves Cal Lutheran to 7-2-4 overall and 6-2-3 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. The Regals now hold sole possession of fourth place at 21 points, but are just one point outside of the three-way tie for first between Pomona-Pitzer, Occidental and Redlands.

The Regals now makes a quick turnaround, facing the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs in a non-conference matchup tomorrow afternoon, October 14, inside William Rolland Stadium at 2 p.m. PST.
