Regals Shutdown Beavers in 7-0 Victory

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran Regals allowed the Caltech Beavers no looks at goal throughout the entire 90-minute contest, Wednesday night, while putting up seven goals of their own in the conference victory.

Freshman Danielle Vis started the avalanche of goals in just the sixth minute, receiving an assist from junior Emily Williams who pushed the ball passed the Beavers defense. Vis then shot the ball from 15 yards into the bottom left corner of the goal to make the score 1-0.

Just three minutes later, sophomore Alexandra Fagerberg shot a bullet from the left corner flag into the middle of the box for sophomore Sam Cornejo, who headed the ball with her right temple into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season.

Vis wasn't quite done taking advantage of her time on the field, though. She took a corner during the 14th minute of the game, which was fielded out by Caltech defenders, but right to the feet of sophomore Trinity Martinez. Martinez then cut the ball perfectly into the air from 25 yards out directly over the head of the Caltech keeper to push the lead to 3-0.

The goal continued to fuel Martinez offensively as she scored again for the Regals just five minutes later. During the 19th minute, she was awarded a free kick from 20 yards out. With ease, she curled the ball over the four-member wall to the top right quadrant of the net past a stunned keeper.

Entering the second half, the sophomores took over the pitch. Alana Bernal caught a break in the 51st minute and chipped a ball up the right side of the field to Abby McHugh. McHugh then served it into the box for Remi Miller who nailed the ball dead center into the net and pushed the score to 5-0.

After a wave of sophomore action, senior Jordan Miller felt it was time to change the pace. Miller found the back of the net during the 85th minute of the game. After a previous shot attempt bounced off the left post, she ensured her second shot found the back of the net with an opportunity in the 84th minute and sent one past the diving keeper.

Lastly, but definitely not least, freshman Kaitlyn Chandler had back-to-back opportunities to score, but both were foiled by the Caltech defense. Although Chandler's second attempt was blocked by the Caltech keeper, senior Ryley Settles was able to collect the ball and dent the back of the net during the 88th minute of the game.

Settles' goal capped the final score at 7-0 at the end of the 90-minute frame. The win moves Cal Lutheran to a 6-2-4 overall and 5-2-3 record in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

Next, the Regals travel to La Verne this Saturday, October 13, against the Leopards at 7 p.m. PST, before returning to William Rolland Stadium the next afternoon to take on the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs at 2 p.m. PST.
