Regals Dominate Beavers 6-0

PASADENA, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran Regals hold on to their clean sheet with a 6-0 domination over the Caltech Beavers. Five different Regals notched goals in Saturday morning's contest on a season-high 26 shots, 19 on target.

The undefeated Regals opened the scoring in just the fifth minute of play with shot by Alexandra Fagerberg that was narrowly blocked by the keeper, but made its way back to the feet of Sam Cornejo who tapped it into the right side of the net to put the Regals up 1-0 early.

Though barraging the Beavers with eight more shots, Cal Lutheran continued to find the hands of Caltech keeper Kali Drango or the right side of the goal.

Finally, the Regals made a breakthrough in the 41st minute after Isabella Chelini's shot rattled off the cross bar and was cleared by Caltech over the end line for a Cal Lutheran corner. Danielle Vis then sent a perfect cross in from the right flag to Jordan Miller whose initial header to the right post was blocked by the keeper back into box. Raquel Gunkel then took advantage of the flurry in the box to slide past her defender and edge the ball with her right foot past the diving keeper to the back of the net.

Up 2-0 entering the second period, the Regals did not lighten up on the Beavers, adding 14 more shots to the box score, four of which found the back of the net, while the defense did not allow Caltech a single shot in the second half.

Again the Regals opened the period with an early goal, this time again by Gunkel who took a corner kick from the left flag three minutes in that found just the right spin to curve in between the posts. Cal Lutheran followed with three additional corners taken by Fagerberg, but had all three attempts for another goal saved by Drango, who finished with 13 saves on the day.

Far from over, the Regals continued to push their lead to 4-0 in the 72nd with a cross from Cate Boller to the right wing Kristina Spaur who timed her shot perfectly past the keeper who had no chance for the save.

Padding their margin, Aly Legrand throttled a ball to Drango who deflected the ball back into play in the 77th minute, but was cleaned up by Boller and passed straight back to Legrand for the put back goal.

Just a minute later, Emily Williams sent a pass up-field to Legrand who made one touch on the ball before sending in the assist to Boller who found the right side of the net for a goal of her own.

Overall Cal Lutheran put 26 shots on the board, 19 on goal, while holding Caltech to just two on the entire day. Both shots by the Beavers immediately found the hands of starting Regals keeper Alexa Soto, who was awarded her first win of the season.

Fifteen different Regals recorded shots in the match, led by Fagerberg who took all five shots on goal. Gunkel, who scored two goals for the Regals, and Boller followed with two shots on goal apiece, while Boller also added two assists with Legrand.

The Regals return to William Rolland Stadium on Wednesday, September 12, at 7 p.m. for their long-awaited home opener against the La Verne Leopards.
