Regals Take Pipers to Double Overtime Draw

Regals Take Pipers to Double Overtime Draw

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Cal Lutheran put up 22 shots, while holding their opponents to just three, in Sunday morning's match against the Hamline Pipers, but could not find the back of the net as the Regals closed their weekend in Minnesota on a 0-0 draw.

Ten different Regals recorded shots in the rainy morning contest, outshooting the Pipers 22-3, and 15-2 in shots on goal. Senior Sarah Tadeusiak led the offense with four shots while sophomore Sam Cornejo added three more on goal for the purple and gold.

Freshman midfielder Sonia Chan took the first attempt of the day just six minutes into play, while Tadeusiak and Remi Miller added two more shots apiece in the first half. Miller's strike in the 31st minute was the closest the Regals came in the first to scoring, but was just edged off the top bar by Piper keeper Dani Wright.

Overall, Wright was credited with saving all 15 shots on goal by the Regals, who went on a 10-1 shooting run in the second period.

Cal Lutheran were given opportunities to go up on the board early with back-to-back corners to start the second half, but were unable to convert on either. Maddy Griess responded with an open shot in the 63rd minute, but couldn't get enough speed on the ball as the keeper caught up just in time to scoop it up.

Entering the game in the second half, goalkeeper Gabby Flores made an important save in the 86th minute to keep the game spotless and captured a dart from Jensen Sevening from the left side to thwart Hamline's only shot of the second period.

Scoreless after regulation, the teams entered their first of two golden-goal overtime periods. This time, it was Jenna Sampson of the Pipers who attacked first, but her attempted veered wide right. Cornejo and Tadeusiak answered and tallied two more shots for Cal Lutheran in the 10-minute period, but had their shots saved and soar high, respectively.

The second overtime period followed suit. Trinity Martinez opened with a shot right at the keeper less than a minute in and Tadeusiak's header off a long throw looked promising but again found the hands of Wright. Martinez and Janelle Effarah closed the game with two last attempts, but neither could give the Regals the last chance victory.

The morning's tie moves the Regals to 1-0-1 on the season as they return to California to face Occidental on Wednesday, September 2, at 7 p.m. at Occidental's Lower Soccer Field.
