Boulware Secures Victory in Regals Season Opener

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Cal Lutheran Regals opened their season in winning fashion over the Augsburg Auggies 1-0, Friday afternoon. Goalkeeper Gabby Flores kept a clean sheet with five saves and transfer Mackenzie Boulware stunned in her debut as a Regal with the go-ahead goal late in the first half.

Though the Regals pressured early with a shot from sophomore Trinity Martinez just two minutes into regulation, the Auggies rebutted with six straight shots of their own, three saved by Flores.

However, the Regals were able to capitalize on an offensive surge in the final ten minutes of the period with four shots on goal of their own, and with 68 seconds left on the clock, Cal Lutheran scored the game's lone goal.

Jordan Miller set up the attack for the Regals and sent a short chip to Boulware just outside the box. With the Augsburg goalkeeper coming off her line, Boulware managed to edge the fifty-fifty ball past her defender and the keeper to roll between the posts.

Up by one at the half, the Regals continued to pressure offensively, including a clear shot from Martinez in the sixty-seventh minute of the game to the top third of the goal that was barely saved by Augsburg keeper Emily Chapman who just got a hand on the ball to deflect over the bar.

Looking for a late equalizer, the Auggies threatened on a corner awarded with just 16 seconds remaining in regulation. Forward Ashley St. Aubin played the ball short from the right corner to Jada Olson who managed to get the last shot off with just five seconds remaining. However, Maddy Griess was exactly where she needed to be for the Regals and deflected the ball back into the midfield to secure the victory.

Overall, Cal Lutheran out-shot Augsburg 18 to 16, with nine shots on goal compared to five by the Auggies. Defensively, Flores' five saves ties for her second highest single game total and most since October 4, 2017 against Whittier. Offensively, Martinez led the team with four shots, two on goal, and Janelle Effarah followed with three shots of her own.

The Regals seek to remain undefeated against the Hamline Pipers on Sunday morning, September 2, at 10:30 a.m. CDT.
