Regals Continue SCIAC Play with Poets

WHITTIER, Calif.– Cal Lutheran women's lacrosse faced a tough opponent on Saturday afternoon as the Regals continued their first season with the Whittier Poets.

The Regals (0-3, 0-3 SCIAC) played their third straight conference game to start the year and fell to the Poets 19-1.

Sarah Mendez scored the lone goal for the Regals as she tallied the first collegiate goal for her career. CLU tallied six shots on the day with Arielle Esparza and Skylar Purvis recording two each.

Cameron Mendez was in goal for the Regals and saw 32 shots come her way. 29 were on goal as she made 10 saves. The defense combined to force 16 turnovers and S. Mendez led the way with three ground balls.

The Regals were successful on 75-percent of their clearing opportunities and were 9-for-12. CLU was also disciplined around their goal on defense and only gave up one free position shot.

The experienced Poets started the game on the right foot and had a 7-0 lead five minutes in. Whittier scored 15 goals in the first half en route to their 19-1 win.

Cal Lutheran heads back home for its next contest and host Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
