Regals Fall to Experienced Tigers

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – In their second game in Cal Lutheran history, the Regals faced an experienced Occidental Tigers team on Saturday afternoon at Patterson Field. This Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) matchup resulted in a victory for the home team.

The Tigers (3-0, 2-0 SCIAC) would outscore the Regals (0-2, 0-2 SCIAC) 25-2.

Arielle Esparza recorded the first goal of the game for the Regals just seven minutes into play. Cameron Mendez also scored a goal in the first half. This would be both Esparza and Mendez's first recorded career goals.

Goalie, Carly Boccia, ended the first half with six saves and Cameron Mendez rounded out the game with 10 saves in the second half. Their combined 16 saves were not enough to fend off the Tiger's strong offensive efforts.

The Regals won a total of four draws and had eight successful clears throughout the game, tying the clears of their opponents. It's clear the Purple and Gold came with good energy and effort as they are eager to improve every game throughout their first season.

Defensive efforts were improved throughout play as Cal Lutheran, in the second half, gave up less than half of the goals they allowed in the first half. However, Occidental was able to get more shots on goal than Cal Lutheran, leaving them with a comfortable scoring deficit.

The Tigers capitalized on several free position shots (4-6), leaving them with more scoring opportunities than the Regals.

Cal Lutheran will look to take their experiences into their next game at Whittier on Feb. 29 at 11 a.m.
