THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — California Lutheran University women's basketball got its first conference win of the season as they Regals took down Caltech 70-62 on Wednesday night.
Mackenzy Iwahashi, Karina McMillan and Cameron Mallory scored double-digits and eight Regals in all scored five-plus points.
Iwahashi led the way with 13 points, hitting three of the Regals 11 three-pointers, and added five rebounds. McMillan added 11 points, eight rebounds and three assists while Mallory put up 10 points including a big three-pointer late in the game.
Aliya DiMuro was next with nine points and eight rebounds, four rebounds being offensive. Danielle Morgan recorded eight points and nine rebounds, Grace Godines had eight points and four assists, Taylor Oshiro had six points and she made both of her three-point attempts and Sara Mills had five points and four rebounds.
Cal Lutheran went 11-for-21 (52.4-percent) from three-point range, while holding Caltech to 3-of-11 (27.3-percent). A huge difference in the game was rebounding. The Regals outrebounded the Beavers 51 to 31. Cal Lutheran also had 24 bench points to Caltech's two. The Regals tallied 14 offensive boards and had 14 second chance points.
The Regals jumped all over Caltech, taking a 21-11 lead after the first quarter. Oshiro drilled her two three-points in the final three minutes to give the Regals the boost they needed. Cal Lutheran kept that pressure on, outscoring the Beavers 20-11 in the second and had a 41-22 lead at the half.
Caltech fired back in the third quarter, scoring 22 points to Cal Lutheran's seven, and the lead was just 48-44. The Regals started the fourth with three straight buckets. Mills and Iwahashi made back-to-back three-pointers and McMillan hit a jump shot to push the lead back to 56-44 with 8:07 left.
The Beavers cut the lead to 60-53 with 4:42 left, but the Regals answered as Mallory drilled a three and the lead was back to 10. Cal Lutheran held the lead the rest of the day and picked up a big win over the Beavers.
The Regals look to stay in the win column as they host UC Santa Cruz on Sunday at 1 p.m.
