PASADENA, Calif. – Cal Lutheran traveled to Caltech to take on the Beavers in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest looking for their third straight victory, but unfortunately could not seem to find their footing in their 69-63 defeat.

The Regals (5-9, 2-4 SCIAC) struggled shooting the basketball, making just 24 of their 67 shots from the field and going just 28.1% from three-point range. The Beavers put together a decent offensive display on their home court, making 28 of their 67 shots from the floor (41.8%).

Jozie Tangeman carried the load for CLU on the offensive end, scoring a team-high 17 points while pulling down seven rebounds on the night. Haley Tyrell recorded her first career double-double, notching a season-high 16 points and grabbing 12 boards. Cameron Mallory and Natalie Ruhl each put up double-digit scoring performances with 11 points apiece.

Cal Lutheran looked solid in the first 10 minutes, taking a 19-12 lead. Mallory knocked down her first three-point attempt of the game and layups from Ruhl and Tangeman got the Regals in a rhythm. CLU closed the quarter on an impressive 11-2 run.

Caltech roared back into the game in the second period, out-scoring the Regals 17-11 to trail by just one point (30-29) at the break.

The teams would trade baskets in the third quarter to set up an exciting fourth quarter. The hosts managed to quickly extend their lead to nine points with a 9-0 run in the early minutes of the final period. The hole would prove to be too much to overcome for the Regals, who did not come within five points for the remainder of the contest.

Caltech pulled off the upset with the 69-63 victory and walked away with their first SCIAC win of the season.

Cal Lutheran looks to regroup when they return to Gilbert Arena Jan. 18 at 4 p.m. when they host Pomona-Pitzer for another SCIAC matchup.
