Regals Walk off Game One, Mendoza Homers in Game Two Against Pacific Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.— Sophomore Taryn Faull pitched the final 3.0 innings ,while freshman Natalie Luna delivered the hit to bring in the winning run, and Cal Lutheran softball walked it off against Pacific Lutheran in game one on Monday afternoon. The Lutes won the second game of the doubleheader 10-6.

Highlights from the day was sophomore Mia Onesto going 5-for-5 in game one. Freshman Ariana Mendoza got things going for herself in the second game as she smashed a 2-run moon shot over the left field fence.

Game One
Faull allowed just two hits and one run over the three innings, while striking out one, and got thw win. The final five innings actually set Cal Lutheran up for the win, as senior Brittany Workman pitched the previous two and also gave up just two hits and a run. 

The offense provided the rest, led by Onesto and her 5-for-5 game, which added two runs. Luna delivered the clutch hit in the bottom of the ninth, and added two RBI. 

Pacific Lutheran opened the scoring in the first game and jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of third. CLU got one run back in the bottom of the inning as senior Kendall Marinesi drove in Onesto. 

The Regals eventually tied up the game in the bottom of the fifth, with RBI from Luna and Mendoza, and took the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a RBI double from junior Natalie Winokur

The Lutes scored the tying run in the top of the seventh, forcing extra innings. After Pacific Lutheran took the lead in the top of the ninth, The Regals answered with two runs in the bottom and stole the game. 

Game Two
After the Lutes scored a run in the top of the first inning, Cal Lutheran answered in the bottom of the half as Mendoza smashed her first collegiate home run. The Regals added two more runs in the second and took a 4-1 lead to the third inning.

Junior Meghan Henry got the call in game number two. After the one run in the first, Henry retired the next four batters until the Lutes broke through again in the third. They scored six runs in the top of the third and chased Henry from the game.

The Regals could not recover as the Lutes added three more runs in the top of the fourth and took a 10-4 lead. CLU got two runs back as Marinesi tripled in the bottom of the inning, scoring Onesto, and then she scored on a passed ball. 

The pitching staffs took care of the rest of the game, allowing no more runs, as the Lutes were victorious 10-6. 

After six non-conference games to start the season, the Regals open up conference play at home and host Pomona-Pitzer on Friday, Feb. 28, for a single game at 1 p.m.
