Mendoza, Serrano Named SCIAC Athletes of the Week

ALISO VIEJO, Calif.– The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) announced their Athlete of the Week honorees and Cal Lutheran's Ariana Mendoza and Olivia Serrano swept the softball awards.

Mendoza was named the Hitter of the Week and Serrano was Pitcher of the Week as Regals softball opened their 2020 season with a split against Antelope Valley. Cal Lutheran fell 4-3 in their first game of the season before bouncing back and taking the second game 7-4.

Mendoza (Granada Hills, Calif.), a freshman, competed in her first games as a Regal. As the designated hitter, Mendoza went 3-for-5 in the team's 7-4 victory over the
Pioneers. She tallied a double with a RBI and a run in a four-run sixth inning which put CLU up 7-2. For the week, she went .500 from the plate.

Serrano (Oxnard, Calif.) got a win in the first start of her senior campaign. She pitched 4.1 innings, facing 21 batters. She allowed five hits and two earned runs, while striking out three. Serrano held the Pioneers to three hits over the first four innings, having a shutout in the process. She helped the Regals to the first win of 2020.

The Regals are back in action Wednesday as Cal Lutheran host the same team, Antelope Valley, for their season opener. The doubleheader starts at noon.
