Regals Tame Tigers; Take Season Series 3-1

LOS ANGELES — The Cal Lutheran softball team swept the Occidental Tigers with impressive offensive outings as the Regals took both games of the double header with scores of 6-2 and 11-7 Friday afternoon at Bell Softball Field.

The Regals avenged a split from earlier this year by completing a sweep today. Cal Lutheran is now 3-1 against Occidental this year. CLU is 16-22 on the year and 9-17 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play.

Brittany Workman got the call for the first game. She threw 92 pitches and only gave up five hits and two earned runs. She pitched 6.0 innings and struck out one batter. Workman thrived in the fourth and fifth innings and sat down six straight batters on the way to her sixth win of the season. Meghan Henry pitched the final inning, gave up no hits and struck out one batter.

Kendall Marinesi and Mikaela Mayhew led the offense with three hits apiece. Makenna Pellerin was next with two hits, including a triple. The offense came from all different parts of the batting order as five Regals recorded a RBI.

Pellerin got the Regals on the board first. She singled to center, scoring Mayhew, and CLU was up early. Cal Lutheran made it 2-0 the very next inning as Workman hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Antonia Rapisardi.

The Regals went up 3-0 in the top of the sixth as Pellerin scored on a passed ball. The Tigers finally got on the board in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run.

Cal Lutheran wasn't done as the Violet and Gold put on the finishing touches in the seventh. Marinesi hit a RBI-double to push the lead to two. Mayhew was up next, and doubled to left field, scoring Marinesi. Olivia Serrano put up the final run as she scored Mayhew with a single. The Regals took the first game of the double header by a score of 6-2.

In the second game, Serrano took the mound. She pitched 6.0 innings and gave up seven hits. She allowed no earned runs, as all seven Tiger runs were scored because of errors. She got her seventh win of the season and is now 7-8. Sienna Perez pitched the last inning and struck out one batter.

Rapisardi had a big game offensively and tallied five RBIs. Jacy Watanabe and Marinesi chipped in with two apiece. The trio each tallied three hits. Workman and Olivia Leyva both had two hits.

The second game started off slower for the Regals. The Tigers took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. In the third, Rapisardi, Marinesi and Workman all connected on RBI singles as they gave CLU the 3-1 lead.

Cal Lutheran continued to pile up the runs as the Regals scored three more in the fourth. Watanabe reached on an error and then Rapisardi hit a two-run RBI single to left center. CLU didn't stop there as Pellerin and Marinesi both had RBIs in the sixth and the score was 8-1.

Occidental got some of the runs back in the bottom of the inning as the Tigers scored five runs and only trailed 8-6. Cal Lutheran got some more breathing room in the seventh as Watanabe hit a RBI single to make it 9-6. Rapisardi then recorded her second two-RBI hit and made it 11-6. Oxy got one run back in the seventh as the Regals took the game 11-7.

Cal Luthern returns home on Saturday for Senior Day. The Regals host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 12 and 2 p.m. at Hutton Field.
