THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The Cal Lutheran Regals own Saturday's double header with identical 2-1 scores against the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas. Brittany Workman and Olivia Serrano pitched back-to-back complete one-run games in the afternoon to take the sweep.
In game one, Workman got the nod and pitched seven innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits while walking one and striking out three. The win moves her to 3-4 on the season.
The Athenas opened up scoring on the afternoon with a single by Reeve Grobecker to score Jessica Fox in the third. However, the Regals came back in the sixth after Olivia Leyva set up the rally with single through to the right side. Up next, Jacy Watanabe grounded out to the pitcher but successfully advanced Leyva to second before Antonia Rapisardi brought her home with a single to left. The Regals then took the lead as Kendall Marinesi doubled to centerfield to bring home Rapisardi for the go-ahead run.
In game two, Olivia Serrano took the mound and pitched another one-run complete game on four hits, four walks and one strikeout. She advances to 4-6 on the season with the win.
Once again, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps opened scoring in the third on groundout by Chloe Amarilla that allowed Grobecker to score. However, the Regals answered with the tying run in the fourth. Watanabe set up the rally with a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Serrano then contributed on the other side of the ball, singling to right and bringing Watanabe home.
The Regals followed up the next inning with the go-ahead run of game two. Marissa Alfaia was able to reach first on an error by the shortstop and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Makenna Pellerin. Catherine Slabaugh followed with single and Leyva brought Alfaia on a sacrifice fly to right.
Today's victories move Cal Lutheran to 11-15 on the season and 4-10 in SCIAC play. The Regals return home April 7, 2018, in a double header against the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens. Games are set for 12 and 2 p.m. PST.
