No. 7 Kingsmen fall to No. 1 Sagehens in SCIAC Opener

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.— A low scoring affair favored the No. 1 team in the country as Pomona-Pitzer took down No. 7 Cal Lutheran men's water polo 9-6 on Saturday afternoon. 

It was the first SCIAC game of the year for the Kingsmen as they drop to 1-4 overall. The loss was their fourth consecutive. Pomona-Pitzer improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in conference.

Six different Kingsmen scored as Tommy CoreyDillon GoldsmithParker JoryJustin KrauseWyatt Lowe and George Lundgren all found the back of the net. Ben Brown helped move the ball around to his fellow teammates and had a team-high two assists and Tanner Kaplan and Lowe led the team with three drawn ejections each. 

Defensively,Andre Rivas was in goal for the entire game. He mad 10 saves, added one steal and one assist, but took the loss. Brown and Lundgren bolstered the defense with two steals apiece while Corey tallied two field blocks. 

The first three quarter swere all about the defense as the teams were neck-and-neck for most of the game. PP scored the first goal with 4:46 left in the first quarter, and the Kingsmen were quick to answer as Brown delivered a perfect ball to the middle of the pool and Goldsmith finished the play off. The Sagehens added one more and had a 2-1 lead at the end of the first. 

CLU answered quickly, and tied up the score on its first possession of the second half. The game would continue to go back-and-forth as PP scored with 5:34 left in the half and CLU followed on the ensuing possession. The Sagehens would add two more goals in the quarter and had a 5-3 lead at the break.

The defenses really came alive in the third quarter as the Kingsmen scored one goal,a breakaway goal by Lowe, shut the Sagehens out, and cut the lead to 5-4 heading to the fourth. That was as close as CLU would get as PP outscored the Kingsmen 4-1 in the fourth and won the game 9-6. 

The Kingsmen continue SCIAC play at home as they welcome the Redlands Bulldogs to the Samuelson Aquatics Ceneter on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
