PROVIDENCE, R.I.— Cal Lutheran men's water polo opened the season on the road as the Kingsmen traveled to the East Coast for the Brown University Invitational. The Kingsmen split on the first day of the season, taking down Conn. College, 16-6, before falling to Brown, 14-7.
Against Conn. College, Jonathan Salandi got the win as he made 13 saves. The Kingsmen defense was also on a roll as George Lundgren and Justin Krause recorded four steals each and Ben Brown had two more.
Offensively,Parker Jory led the team with four goals while Hans Cole and Brown both recorded a hat trick. The Kingsmen shared the ball very well, tallying eight assists, with Lundgren having three of them.
CLU took advantage of their power play opportunities and were 5-of-11 against the Camels. Wyatt Lowe had the most as he drew four ejections. The Kingsmen jumped all over the Camels and had a commanding 11-2 lead at the half. CLU never looked back as the Kingsmen won their first game of the year 16-6.
The Kingsmen had a tougher time with Division I foe, the Brown Bears. Jory led the team again as he scored four goals for the second straight game. CLU was also great offensively, when drawing ejections, as they had 13, but could only convert on four of them. Tanner Kaplan drew the most with four and Cole had three more.
Defensively, Brown recorded six steals and Andre Rivas was in the goal, and made eight saves, but took the loss. This game, it was the Bears that got the quick start. The Bears jumped all over the Kingsmen and had a 6-2 lead at the half. Brown University doubled up the Kingsmen at the end of the game and won 14-7.
The Kingsmen continue the Brown University Invitational tomorrow with early morning contests. CLU plays Harvard at 7 am PST and then takes on MIT at 10.
