UC Santa Cruz Sneaks Past Men’s Volleyball in Four

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Cal Lutheran men's volleyball went on the road and fell to the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs 3-1 on Thursday night. Scores of the match were 20-25, 25-21, 20-25, 22-25.

The Kingsmen are in Santa Cruz, Calif., for the UCSC Slug Slam Tournament on Friday and Saturday. Before the tournament kicked off, the Kingsmen took on the host and dropped to 1-2 on the young season.

Ben Weber led the way with 15 kills, but had 10 errors, as he hit .156. Logan Marks was next with nine kills, Jake Tucker had five and Noah Rigo added four more. 

Taylor Marks recorded his first double-double of the year as he dished out 29 assists and added 11 digs. Both were team-highs. 

The Kingsmen were a force at the net and Borys Horiuk led the charge with six block assists. T. Marks showed an all-around game with four block assists and Weber had two service aces.  

Every set was in the 20s as neither team had a big advantage. The Banana Slugs did hit with a percentage of .288, but the Kingsmen had just .148. 

The Kingsmen were up in the first set, but the Banana Slugs fired back and stole the first set. Cal Lutheran responded and took the second set to force a tie. UC Santa Cruz snuck past the Kingsmen as they the third and fourth sets.

The Kingsmen continue the season with the UCSA Slug Slam Tournament. On Friday, Cal Lutheran will take on Ill. Wesleyan at 10:45 a.m. and Edgewood at 5:30 p.m.
