Kingsmen Tame Mavericks

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The California Lutheran men's volleyball team took down the Medaille College Bobcats for the second time this season as the Kingsmen won 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-14) Thursday night in Gilbert Arena.

The Kingsmen swept the Mavericks for the second time this season and improved to 11-4. Medaille dropped to 4-12.

Cal Lutheran's defense was on point tonight as they held Medaille to a -.025 hitting percentage. The Kingsmen tallied 25 kills and 8.0 total team blocks.

Setter Grant Nelson kept the offense going as he had 28 assists. Patrick Rowe led the Kingsmen eight kills. Andrew Reina was right behind with six. Michael Campbell, Justin Dietrich and Brendan Ward each had four more.

Defensively, Rowe and Mason Mercer had five digs. Campbell and Rowe had three block assists each. Dietrich tallied two block assists and one solo block.

In the first set, Cal Lutheran jumped out to a 9-4 lead. The Mavericks cut the lead down to one, 15-14, before the Kingsmen went on a run again. The Violet and Gold then scored seven straight points and had a 22-14 lead. Cal Lutheran went on to win the first game 25-16.

In the second set, it was Medaille that had the early led as the Mavericks were up 14-9. The Kingsmen continued to battle and cut the lead to one at 18-17. The score would remain within one or two points all the way until the end of the game. CLU continued battling and tied the score at 24. Back-to-back attacking errors gave CLU the 26-24 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Kingsmen kept that momentum going in the third set and won 25-14 and swept the Mavericks.

Cal Lutheran begins the Cal-Lu-Fornia Classic tomorrow as the Kingsmen host Lakeland. The match starts at 7 p.m. inside Gilbert Arena.
